Chapter 24: Communicable Diseases

In most cases when people become sick this happens because they get a communicable disease. A communical disease is a disease that spreads around by going from one organism to another and interacting with the environment.

An organism, which causes a disease is called a pathogen. These include mainly bacteria, viruses, fungi, etc. When a pathogen infiltrates another organisms body it has already caused an infection.

Viruses are simply genetic material protected by a protein coat. Viruses are considered half dead because they can only reproduce with the help of a host cell. There is no medicine that can cure viruses but less serious viruses can be cured with common sense such as keeping yourself warm, eating healthy foods, and such.

Bacteria are a little less serious than viruses. There are many types of medicine that can cure bacteria such as antibiotics. Bacteria are considered alive organisms because they do reproduce through the process of mitosis.

There are many ways you can protect yourself from getting these pathogens. There are common sense type of things such as washing your hands before you eat and after using the bathroom. Handling food correctly and making sure that it is stored correctly. You can also help your body by fighting these pathogens by eating a balanced diet. Avoid contact with sick people. Make sure that you receive the required vaccinations to prevent illness. Probably the most important thing: take care of yourself when you receive the pathogen. It is easier to stop a pathogen at an early stage than when it has developed and reproduced in your body.
